(AP Photo/Chris Pizzello) (CBS) Teen pop star Miley Cyrus, noted poet and educator Maya Angelou, and raunchy comedian and reality star Kathy Griffin are probably not mentioned in the same sentence that often. But Cyrus and Angelou, and a program about Griffin are on the diverse list of winners of the 2008 Gracie Allen Awards, the American Women in Radio & Television announced Wednesday. The awards salute achievement in programming by, for and about women as well as individual contributions to the radio, broadcast television, cable and Web-based media. Cyrus was honored for outstanding female lead - comedy series (children/adolescent), Angelou as outstanding host - information, for her work on the radio show "Oprah & Friends," and an "E! True Hollywood Story" profile of Griffin was named outstanding portrait/biography program. Other national winners include actress Holly Hunter ("Saving Grace"), producer Cecile Frot-Coutaz ("American Idol"), actress Ali Larter ("Heroes"), NBC News' Hoda Kotb, CBS News' Nancy Giles, CNN's Heroes-An All Star Tribute, Lifetime's "Army Wives," Oxygen's "Who Cares About the Girls," CNBC's "The Suze Orman Show," WE TV's "Wedding Central" and Nickelodeon/MTV Networks' "Half of Us" Special. National award winners will be presented at a black-tie Gala, hosted by E! News anchor and managing editor Giuliana Rancic, in the Broadway Ballroom of the New York Marriott Marquis on Wednesday, May 28, 2008. The Gracies honor achievement in programming created for women, by women and about women in all facets of electronic media, as well as individuals who have made contributions to the industry. The awards program also encourages the realistic and multifaceted portrayal of women in entertainment, commercials, news, features and other programs.
