(CBS/AP) Top designers are showing off their Fall 2008 collections at Fashion Week in New York. The shows have been jammed with not only the fashion-forward, but lots of A-list celebrities. Glamour magazine Executive Fashion Editor at Large Suze Yalof Schwartz has been taking it all in, and filling in Early Show viewers about the goings-on both on the runways and off.

On Day Four on Monday, more sophisticated looks took the lead, instead of the trendy fashions that had dominated the catwalks since the start.

The turn wasn't surprising, Schwartz says, with collections shown from designer superstars such as Carolina Herrera and Oscar de la Renta.

Schwartz says she was most impressed by Herrera's fall collection: "It's the most gorgeous show I've seen from beginning to end." Models donned jodhpur (riding) pants and Peter Pan-like hats with super-long plumes evoking a very rich English countryside feel.

As for Oscar de la Renta, his collection included high-waisted evening pants and belted everything, as well as paten leather bags, shoes and belts with a tortoise look. Describing it as "working opulence," Schwartz explained that the pieces take you from day to evening.

Dresses also continue to a big presence on the runways -- from day to evening styles. Designer Jill Stuart, known for her dresses, featured several, as did designer Peter Som, who had his own asymmetrical interpretation.

STYLE TIPS:

  • Schwartz suggests belting your coat for an easy update to your look
  • Belted everything seen in the Spring 2008 collections continues into Fall 2008
  • We're still seeing shoe booties, but they're getting a little higher
  • Monday's glamour "don't" is now a glamour "do": Designers are showing sandals with tights (not sheer hosiery). Although we've seen this with peep-toe shoes, now it's being shown with even more opened shoes.

The day also had lots of big celebrities attending the shows. Schwartz thinks the writers' strike-related the lack of red carpet events has brought out even more celebs than usual. Among those spotted Monday were Tyra Banks, Hilary Swank, Vanessa Carleton, Mandy Moore, Piper Perabo, Fergie, Josh Stone, and Rihannah.
